Common Causes of Odors

Odors in a property can arise from numerous sources. Biological processes, such as the presence of bacteria on damp surfaces, can lead to musty smells often associated with mold and mildew. Environmental factors, including smoke from fires or chemical substances, can also permeate a property and leave a lingering scent.

Some common causes of odors include:

1. Water Damage

Burst pipes, ceiling water damage, and flooding can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew, leading to musty and unpleasant odors.

Water Damaged

2. Fire Damage

Smoke and soot particles from a fire can permeate various surfaces, leaving behind a persistent and often overpowering smell.

Bedroom Fire Damage

3. Mold Damage

Moisture and humidity provide an ideal environment for mold growth, releasing spores that contribute to a distinctive and unpleasant odor.

Visible Molds

4. Storm Damage

Organic matter left by storms can decay, producing odors, and overwhelmed sewage systems can introduce foul smells into properties.

Basement Storm Damage

5. Cigarette Smoke

Smoke odor is particularly difficult to remove as it can permeate fabrics, walls, and furniture.

6. Pet Odors

Pets can leave behind smells from accidents, body odor, or wet fur. These odors can be particularly stubborn in carpets and upholstery.

7. Cooking Odors

Strong smells from cooking, especially with spices, oils, or frying, can linger in a home.

8. Biohazards

This includes odors from blood, bodily fluids, and other biological materials, often requiring specialized cleaning and deodorization.

9. Sewage and Water Damage

Leaks or backups can lead to foul odors due to the presence of waste materials or standing water.

10. Decomposing Organic Matter

This can include food waste, dead animals, or other organic material breaking down within a property.

11. Chemical Odors

Various household chemicals can leave behind strong odors that are difficult to neutralize.

Identifying Odor Problems in Your Property

Knowing when your property has an odor problem is key to maintaining a healthy environment. Persistent or unusual smells that don’t dissipate over time are clear indicators. Visible signs of mold or damage, as well as changes in air quality, can also signal an odor issue. If visitors comment on smells or if you notice a scent upon returning after a time away, it may be time to consult professionals.

Here are some signs that indicate your property may have an odor issue:

1. Lingering Smells

Persistent, unpleasant smells that don’t dissipate with regular cleaning or airing out may indicate an underlying problem.

2. Allergies or Respiratory Issues

If occupants experience increased allergy symptoms or respiratory issues when inside the property, it could be a sign of hidden mold or other contaminants.

3. Visible Mold Growth

Visible mold patches often come hand-in-hand with a distinct, musty odor. If you notice mold, it’s essential to address both the visible growth and the accompanying smell.

4. Recent Water or Fire Damage

If your property has recently experienced water or fire damage, it’s crucial to be vigilant for any developing odors, as they may signify hidden issues.

What our customers say about us

Wonderful company to work with.

Ali Reynolds

What we liked most was the professionalism and the courteousness of everyone involved. Selena really made us, particularly me, feel like Service Masters really cared about what was going on. I really called her a lot (in retrospect, probably too much). But she never made me feel like I was a burden. She was actually my lifeline. The gentlemen who put down the fans (I did not get their names) were equally compassionate and professional. They checked the fans, and checked the fans, and … checked the fans. They were really thorough and explained every step to us as to what they were doing and why. Then you have the lady and gentleman (again, I did not get their names) who removed furniture and carpet. Wow!! Just watching them was amazing. They cleared everything out in no time and they, too, were professional and courteous. They also explained what they were doing and why. Service Masters has a PHENOMENAL team working for them. I just can’t brag on them enough. THANK YOU ALL!!

The team was awesome!  After a storm we had some damage from water and wind.  I was very impressed with the attention to detail the entire team had and will recommend them to all my friends and family.

Very professional and honest. The employees are trained to do the job right the first time. They explain to the customer why it’s important to do certain things to their home as well. I’ve had customers tell me what a wonderful job they have done and would highly recommend them.

Very professional and very through and customer friendly. Excellent service and they were very knowledgeable about the restoration work needed. The tech (WILL) did a great job in drying out the walls and floor that were damaged by a water leak from a hot water heater. The owner (DIEDRA) showed up to help and oversee the packing of furniture into a container and then came back 8 months later to unpack and place the furniture back in the house. Outstanding service from everyone involved in the operation, including the office coordinator (SELENA). Would very highly recommend this company for any restoration involving fire, water, or smoke damage including carpet cleaning. Thanks guys for a job well done 😄👍
